TOLEDO, OH – Jeff Lerg posted 33 saves plus three more in the shootout to lead Toledo to a 2-1 win over Wheeling Friday night at the Huntington Center. Toledo has an overall record of 12-6-1-3 and 3-2-0-1 at home.
Toledo out shot Wheeling 13-9 in the first period, one that saw great chances from both sides. The Walleye would strike first when Austin Wuthrich sent a wrist shot into the top corner of the net at 5:41 of the second period. Defenseman Ralfs Freibergs picked up the lone assist on the 6th goal of the year for Wuthrich.
The Nailers tied the game with a power play goal at 7:07 of the third period. Toledo held a 5-4 shot advantage in the overtime but goaltender Lerg had to stop two Wheeling breakaways during the three on three OT. In the shootout, A.J. Jenks beat Wheeling goaltender Franky Palazzese and Lerg went a perfect three for three for the win.
Walleye Notes: Goaltender Jeff Lerg stopped 33 of 34 shots and has a record of 7-2-2… Toledo has a record of 3-3 in shootouts this year.
