Saint John wins President’s Cup, sweeping Blainville-Boisbriand Sea Dogs will represent QMJHL in Memorial Cup

QUEBEC CITY, P.Q. — Leading the President Cup series 3-0 Saint John played very strong game. Dominating 14-8 in shots on goal and 2-0 on main scoreboard, Saint John signed a fourth straight victory winning Game 4, 5-1. Spencer Smallman led the Sea Dogs offense with two goals. Saint John goaltender Callum Booth establish a new record blanking the opposition for 177 minutes before Armada right winger Pierre Luc Dubois beat him in the second period .

With their backs to the wall, in a do-or-die game, the Blainville-Boisbriand came out strong in first minutes of the game. Trailing 0-3 in the series Joel Bouchard teams saw their opponent break the ice.

Saint John left winger Bokondji Imama scored his 8th of the playoff as his backhanded shot surprised Armada goaltender Samuel Montembeault low on stick side at 7:29 of the initial period.

A penalty for too many men on the ice came to aunt the Armada with Spencer Smallman wrist shot beat Blainville-Boisbriand netminder on glove side at 17:28.

Dominated 14-8 in shots on goal in first period, Blainville-Boisbriand finally solved the Booth mystery after 177 minutes of play where the Sea Dogs goaltender shutout his opponent.

Trailing 0-2 after one period, Pierre-Luc Dubois successfully put a puck behind the Carolina Hurricanes prospect who had been an NHL fourth round selection (93rd overall in 2015), as the Armada right winger wrist shot went through several skates before going in for first Blainville-Boisbriand goal in last three games. Alex Barre-Boulet and Yvan Mongo got the assist on power play goal at 13:53.

Saint John replied less than two minutes later regaining their two-goal lead. A turnover at defensive blue line led to Sea Dogs defenseman Simon Bourque fourth goals of the playoff, as his wrist shot, following a great pass from teammate Smallman beat Armada netminder on his right side at 15:21.

Saint John still led by two 3-1 after forty minutes of play.

Saint John began third period missing great chance to add to their two goal leads. A consecutive penalty to Shawn Miller for obstruction followed by Charles Roy for hit to the head gave a five-on-three power play advantage.

Missing great scoring opportunity earlier Spencer Smallman scored his second of the game giving a three goal leads to his team at 5:16 of the third period. A copy and paste play leading the Sea Dogs to their second play. Defenseman Thomas Chabot made pass to Matthew Joseph who only redirect to Smallman living no chance to Armada netminder.

Matthew Highmore scored Saint John fifth goal to finally seal Blainville-Boisbriand fate with 4:53 remaining to the third period.

Winning their third President Cup Championship in last seven years, the Saint John Sea Dogs will represent the QMJHL to the Memorial Cup tournament beginning May 19-2017.
