Quebec wins in controversy

QUEBEC CITY, P.Q. —The Quebec Remparts begin a busy weekend with three games in three nights, the first stop in Shawinigan facing the Cataractes at Centre Bionest.

With the score tied 3-3 and neither team able to win in overtime, it was a goal scored by Anthony Duclair in the shootout that made the difference leading Quebec to a 4-3 win.

After Adam Erne and Peter Sakaris put the puck behind respective goaltender Gabriel Girard (Shawinigan) and Louis Domingue (Quebec) both netminders made four straight saves.

A second series of shots were needed to finally get a winner. After seeing Quebec Alexandre Contois and Frederick Roy been stopped by Girard. Loik Poudrier and Kirill Kabanov weren’t able to put the puck behind Quebec netminder.

Designated as the 11th shooters by Quebec, rookie Anthony Duclair scored what became the goal that made the difference. Not sure the puck had crossed the goal line behind Cataractes netminder, referee Pascal St-Jacques needed to review Duclair shot on video, before allowing the goal, thinking the puck had hit both post.

But fortunately for Patrick Roy’s team the puck went in and since Yannick Veilleux missed his shot, Quebec has had the last word in shootout.

Knowing he needed to a play big game, Domingue answered the challenge allowing only one goal to Cataractes captain Michael Bournival in the first twenty minutes.

Trading good scoring chances in the opening period both teams played with intensity. Sakaris (twice), Yannick Veilleux, Frederick Gaudreau and defenseman Jonathan Racine got all good chances to open the scoring but Domingue was always there to make the save whether with his blocker, his pads, or his right glove.

Quebec also had great scoring opportunities, Jeremie Malouin, Gabriel Desjardins and Alexandre Contois (twice) forced Shawinigan goalie Gabriel Girard to close the door.   The Cataractes added to their lead with 9:36 remaining in the second period; Morgan Ellis another Montreal prospects, beat Quebec netminder high on left side.   Quebec cut Shawinigan lead in half with a power play goal with 4:33 remaining in the period. Logan Shaw didn’t give any chance to Cataractes goalie when his one timer from left faceoff circle beat Girard high on left side.   Quebec was the beneficiary of a third power play when the Cataractes were penalized for too many men on the ice with less than two minutes left in second period.   Successfully killing the rest of penalty to begin the third period, confusion behind Shawinigan goal, led to Quebec tying goal with 9:14 remaining in the third period. Unable to control the puck, the Cataractes defenseman Justin Hache lost the puck to Jeremie Malouin who saw his shot hit Girard before going in.   Beneficiary of their first power play opportunity in the game, Taylor Carnavale gave back the lead to his team 3-2 with his first goal with his new team only 14 seconds into Anthony Duclair penalty for Quebec and only 1:06 after Quebec trying goal.   Michael Bournival’s penalty for delay of game gave Quebec rookie defenseman Anthony Gingras the chance to score his first junior goal. Quebec third goal came with only 2:10 remaining in the third period sendnig both teams in overtime.   Neither team was able to score in the OT session and Duclair ended the suspense in Quebec’s favor with controversial goal.   Quebec next game will be at home hosting the Gatineau Olympiques.
