After a resounding 7-3 victory on Saturday evening the Wildcats travelled down to Bracknell to take on the Bees in another league and cup double fixture. The Wildcats going into the contest missing Aaron Nell, Callum Buglass, Toms Rutkis & Ben Nethersell as well as Ryan Aldridge.
The opening period was played at a slow pace, it was a goalless period with very few chances falling to either side. The Wildcats best chance came through Tomasz Malasinski who had a shot well saved by Alex Mettam between the Bees pipes. At the other end of the ice Stevie Lyle was making some good pad saves to deny both Lukas Smital & Matt Foord. The shots on goal for the opening period finished 7-3 in favour of the hosts.
The middle period proved to be slightly more action packed. Despite there only being 10 shots combined over the middle period. There were however, two goals in two minutes and six seconds. Firstly the Wildcats were able to convert on a powerplay opportunity. With Lukas Smital sitting a 2+2+10 penalty for Spearing, Max Birbraer was able to cut in from the wing and fire a beautiful wristshot into the top corner of the net, to open the scoring. The assists on the goal going to Jonas Höög & Floyd Taylor.
A few moments later the Bees had tied the game up through Olegs Lascenko. After two quick saves from Lyle the puck found it’s way to Lascenko who slammed the puck home from a tight angle and into the roof of the Wildcats net with the goal being timed at 35:18. The second period swiftly came to a close with the game locked at a goal a piece.
The final period was similar to the first period. Neither side were able to breach the defences of their opponents despite a handful of chances falling at both ends of the ice. The Bees probably created the better of the chances when a manic few seconds saw two or three chances be turned away by Lyle. Messrs Foord, Spearing and Basic all denied by the Welsh netminder. At the other end of the ice Jordan Kelsall had to good chances to seal the win but both shots were saved by Alex Mettam, the buzzer sounded which meant a spell of three on three overtime.
The extra stanza was action packed all on its own. Both sides had brilliant opportunities to win the game. Alex Barker forced the Wildcats defence into a mistake early on but saw his shot saved by thr glove of Lyle. Matt Selby found himself through on goal with about two minutes to play but he was unable to find the top corner of the net. The Wildcats were able to breach the Bees defence, Tomasz Malasinski, picked the puck up from Liddiard, and danced around the defence before lifting the puck over Mettam and into the back of the net..
With just 7 seconds on the clock the Wildcats had sealed the four point weekend and avoiding the dreaded penalty shootout. Next weekend sees the Wildcats host Manchester on Saturday before travelling to Milton Keynes to take on the Lightning on Sunday.
