PENSACOLA, FLA. – On Wednesday, November 11, the Pensacola Ice Flyers pulled out the win on Veterans Appreciation Night by using a third period comeback to down the visiting Mississippi RiverKings by a score of 3-2 tonight.
After a scoreless first period, Joey Holka broke the 0-0 tie just 27 seconds into the second period. Corey Banfield and Adam Pawlick picked up the assists. Mississippi tied the game at one just under four minutes later when Mark Pustin beat Ice Flyers goalie Matt Zenzola. The RiverKings took the lead with 5:24 left in the middle frame when Devin Mantha scored on a shorthanded breakaway.
The score remained 2-1 for nearly a full 20 minutes of play before the Ice Flyers tied the game up. Matt Larke sped down the right wing and fired a shot that was deflected before it reached RiverKings goalie Peter Di Salvo and slipped out to the left point where Cole Ruwe rifled a hard shot that found twine. Larke had the only assist on Ruwe’s first goal of the season. About two and half minutes later, the Ice Flyers regained the lead with a power play goal from Adam Pawlick on a shot from the right wing faceoff circle. Mike Krieg and Banfield got the helpers on the marker.
Zenzola stopped 26 of the 28 shots he faced. Ruwe was named the third star of the game while Banfield was the second star and Pawlick was the first.
