The Cleveland Monsters beat the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (36-13-4-2) 2-1 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Rocket Arena. With the win, the Monsters are now 29-17-6-1 and are currently in second place in the AHL’s North Division standings.
Cleveland’s Zach Aston-Reese scored the only goal of the opening frame at 6:21 with helpers from Guillaume Richard and Brendan Gaunce to put the Monsters up 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.
Penguins’ Matt Gumba scored the equalizer at 17:10 while on the man-advantage to make the score 1-1 heading into the third.
Following a scoreless third period, Cleveland’s Jack Williams put home the game-winner in extra time assisted by Richard and Dysin Mayo to make the final score 2-1 Monsters.
Cleveland’s Ivan Fedotov stopped 18 shots for the win while Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s Sergei Murashov made 27 saves in defeat.
