Kings edge Isles, 3-2, on Doughty’s shortie

Drew Doughty has been finding the back of the net this early season for the Los Angeles Kings.

On Sunday night, Doughty netted a game-winning, shorthanded goal in the Kings 3-2 win over the New York Islanders.

“Luckily I saw it at the last second and tried to get some wood on it,” Doughty said. “Great pass by [Kopitar]. You expect him to do that every game and he never disappoints.”

Jake Muzzin scored on the power-play and Anze Kopitar added a marker for LA.

“We go as they go, and you always want your best players being your best players. I think they have been tremendous on both sides of the puck,” LA head coach John Stevens said of Kopitar and Dustin Brown

The Kings improved to 4-0-1 on the campaign.

The Isles got goals from Casey Cizikas and Josh Bailey.

John Tavares missed the gaping maw of an empty net late as the puck sailed through the crease.

“They’re counting on me to produce and I haven’t done that as consistently to start the season as I would like,” Tavares said. “I definitely expect more of myself, especially when I get those chances.”

Darcy Kuemper made 23 saves to get the win for LA in his fist start.

Jaroslav Halak made 24 saves in taking the loss.

“We have to play like we did in the second period. We kind of shot ourselves in the foot a little bit by taking a couple penalties right in the midst of really tilting the ice, pouring lines on them. They were dog-tired,” Islanders head coach Doug Weight said after the Isles were forced on their heels in the first and third periods.
