MOSCOW, RUSSIA – AK Bars drew first blood in this years Gagarin Cup Finals, defeating HC MVD 3-2 in the opening game of the best of seven series.
After a goal less first period which saw limited chances, particularly for Bars, the 2nd period was an end to end thriller, with HC MVD twice taking the lead. But when Alexei Yemelin’s centring pass deflected past MVD netminder Michael Garnett it left the game wide open at 2-2 game going in to the final frame.
Once again both sides traded chances, but only Bars forward Obukhov Dmitry could find a way through, sealing a 3-2 win for his side.
Game 2 will take place on Friday night, before moving to AK Bars home, the Tatneft Arena, in Kazan for games 3 and 4 on Monday and Tuesday.
