Early Christmas present for the Steelers with Ragan delivering

SHEFFIELD, U.K.The Sheffield Steelers’ fans were today rejoicing as new owner Paul Ragan announced he has re-signed Sheffield Steelers Player/Coach and fan favourite Ben Simon for next season.

Ragan only took over the reigns as the clubs new owner yesterday, but he didn’t have time to rest as he negotiated a deal with the popular American to secure his services for another campaign.

Ex-NHL’er Simon, who played 81 games in ‘The Show’ with Columbus and Atlanta has been a huge hit with the players and fans alike in Sheffield with his ‘all or nothing’ style of play. He truly leads by example on the ice giving 100% every shift and finishing off every hit.
New owner Paul Ragan today spoke of his decision regarding Simon.

“I have spoken with Ben and told him that I want him as my first signing for next year. I’ve been very impressed with him both on and off the ice this season. His is a quality player but more so a quality leader and individual. I want Ben to mould a Steelers team on his vision and work ethic,” Ragan said.

“Whilst we haven’t sat down and signed pieces of paper, both Ben and I have agreed that the Steelers is where Ben will be next year. We need stability here and knowing right now that we have Ben Simon as our Coach for a minimum of the next season and a half is fantastic news for all of us at the club whether that be as an owner or as a supporter,” Ragan added.

The move has gone down well with the Steelers faithful who were voicing their pleasure on the fans forum and Facebook page, who have had a double boost within the last 48 hours after Ragan’s takeover.

Simon is also happy with recent events.

“I’ve spoken with the new owners and they seem very happy with the job I am doing which is always nice to know. Of course I’m delighted that they want me to return. I’ve told them that I’m happy to do so and after the holiday period we will sit down properly and move forward,” Simon said.

One move that hasn’t been as well received is that of the return of influential match night announcer and Media Liaison Officer Dave Simms.

Simms walked out in the summer after a disagreement with previous owner Bob Phillips. But now with Phillips completely out of the picture he was more than happy to accept his previous position back.

“It’s been a horrible four months away. This is the best Christmas present I have ever had and I can’t thank Paul and his team enough for giving me the opportunity to return. I’d also like to thank both Chris and Steve who did a great job in my absence,” Simms said.

“The job now is a simple one, create the best atmosphere in the Elite League on our game night show. We will do that and it will start on Boxing Day for the game against the Panthers, what a great day to return. Come prepared to enjoy yourself,” Simms added.

Some Steelers fans have been voicing their displeasure about Simms’ abrupt announcing style, with Simms himself replying and allaying the concerns.

”Points raised on others’ posting regarding announcing style noted and taken on board” Simms confirmed.

So with a new owner at the helm, and a highly regarded Player/Coach returning, as well as a Marmite-like Simms (you either love him or hate him) all seems to be well in South Yorkshire.

The Steelers will be looking to make their Christmas complete with two wins over their nearest and dearest rivals the Nottingham Panthers on Boxing Day and 24 hours later for the return fixture in Nottingham.
