The New Jersey Devils announced today that the team has acquired defenseman Declan Chisholm in a trade with Washington, in exchange for New Jersey’s own fourth-round selection in the 2027 NHL Draft. Chisholm has one year left on a two-year, $3,200,000 ($1,600,000 average annual value) contract he signed on June 30, 2025. The announcement was made by General Manager Sunny Mehta.
Chisholm, 26, skated in 26 games and notched seven points (one goal, six assists). He skated in his 100th career NHL game when he made his Capitals’ debut on October 12, 2025. The left-handed shot was acquired on June 28, 2025, by Washington from Minnesota with a sixth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
The 6’1”, 185lbs. defenseman set career highs in 2024-25 with the Minnesota Wild when he scored 12 points (2g-10a) in 66 games, averaging 17:00 TOI. He split 2023-24 between Winnipeg (2gp, 0g-1a-1pts) and Minnesota (29gp, 3-g-5a-8pts). He was claimed off waivers by the Wild on January 29, 2024. In 125 career NHL regular-season games, he has scored six goals and 22 assists for 28 points, with 32 penalty minutes between time with Winnipeg, Minnesota, and Washington.
In 146 AHL regular-season games, all with Winnipeg’s farm team in Manitoba, Chisholm scored 16 goals and 75 assists for 91 points with 61 penalty minutes over parts of four seasons, 2020-21 to 2023-24. He added 11 points (2g-9a) in 10 Calder Cup Playoff games during two playoff appearances (2022 & 2023). Chisholm was also selected for the 2023 AHL All-Star Challenge.
Born on January 12, 2000, Winnipeg selected Chisholm in the fifth round, 150th overall, in the 2018 NHL Draft. The native of Bowmanville, Ontario, played three seasons, 2017-18 to 2019-20, in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with Peterborough. He totaled 142 career points (22g-120a) in 214 regular-season contests for the Petes. In his final OHL campaign, he finished third among defensemen in assists and scoring (13g-56a-69pts), and served as an alternate captain.
