AAHA Dragons facing extinction

FRASER, Mich. – In the last month, two ECHL teams have closed their doors due to financial difficulties. If the discussion amongst fans is true and two very big occurrences are harbingers of things to come, the All-American Hockey Association may be the next to suffer a loss. The home-and-home weekend series between the Battle Creek Revolution and the Detroit Dragons set for December 27 in Battle Creek and December 28 in Fraser has been completely cancelled amid rumors that the Detroit team is having serious financial issues that could force the team to fold. Allegations of non-payment to Great Lakes Sports City in Fraser, the Dragons’ home rink, were brought to the fore Saturday afternoon on the league’s message board. It was also alleged that the players had not received paychecks in some time. According to information posted on the league website, Saturday’s game was called off due to dense fog advisories. Sources within the Battle Creek organization indicated that “transportation issues” involving the weather and lack of an available bus kept the Dragons in Fraser instead of heading to Battle Creek. ProHockeyNews.com was able to confirm the game cancellations via phone calls to The Rink – the Revolution’s home in Battle Creek – and to Great Lakes Sports City. It was also learned that the league has scheduled a conference call on Monday, December 29 to discuss the situation. Reached via phone, Evansville Icemen General Manager and Association co-founder Chip Rossetti did confirm the conference call set for Monday morning. He said that the discussion will most likely center on options to maintain the four team level necessary for the Association to finish the season.
