SHEFFIELD, U.K.- The Sheffield Steeldogs triumphed over the Telford Tigers on Saturday Nov. 17., securing a 2-1 win at home, before losing 5-3 away to the EPL League leaders, Basingstoke Bison, the following day.
After a tentative and uneventful first period, Telford opened the scoring early in the second period.
At 20:37, Telford’s Tim Burrows fired the puck into the back of the Steeldogs net on the PP whilst Steeldogs’ Pavel Gomeniuk sat out a two minute penalty for tripping.
The ever valiant Steeldogs fought back, however, with coach, Andre Payette, grabbing the equaliser at 32:54 to make it 1-1.
Just five minutes into the third and final period, Derek Campbell fired home to put the Steeldogs into the lead at 45:28.
The Steeldogs managed to see out the game and secure two crucial points at home with a 2-1 victory over the Telford Tigers.
The following day, the Steeldogs travelled to Basingstoke, for what would turn out to be a bad day at the office against the Bison.
The Bison opened their goal scoring account after 8:26 with a 5-3 PP goal from Greg Owen, as Payette and Campbell shared the penalty box.
The Steeldogs failed to make much of an impact in the first period after racking up a total of 26 penalty minutes and spending the majority of the period on the PK.
Basingstoke quickly doubled their lead in the second period at 22:50, as Greg Chambers fired the puck high into the net past James Flavall.
The Steeldogs managed to pull one back midway through the second period. Ben Morgan tapped in Edgars Bebris shot at 33:34 on a 4-4 PP to make it 2-1.
The Bison extended their lead once more, early on in the third period. Chambers claimed his second of the night at 43:40 as he coolly slotted the puck past Flavall.
Owen also secured his second goal of the evening after finding himself unmarked in front of goal on the PP whilst Dmitri Rodin sat out a tripping penalty for the Steeldogs. Owen made no mistake with the finish to put the Bison up 4-1 at 47:37.
The resilient Steeldogs refused to give up, and two goals in the last five minutes of play gave the travelling fans some hope of a dramatic comeback.
Gomeniuk fired the puck into the net at 55:37 to make it 5-2.
Lloyd Gibson scrambled home Sheffield’s third goal of the night at 59:32 to take the Steeldogs to within two goals of the Bison. However, the gallant efforts from the Steeldogs late on in the third period were in vain, as the game finished 5-3.
Edgars Bebris was awarded the MOTM after a hard-working shift and assisting all three of goals for the Steeldogs.
The Steeldogs face an away weekend, travelling first to Milton Keynes to take on the Lightning on Saturday Nov. 24., before making the journey to Telford to face the Tigers on Sunday Nov. 25.
