Steeldogs secure their first piece of silverware of the 2012/13 season

SHEFFIELD, U.K.- The Sheffield Steeldogs hosted the first leg of the pre-season War of the Roses Challenge Cup against Manchester Phoenix, beating their rivals 3-2.
 
A second period double from Steeldogs’ Captain, Greg Wood, at 24:02 and 32:04, gave the Sheffield side a two goal lead. Phoenix’s Luke Boothroyd pulled one back at 38:10 just before the end of the second period.
 
The Steeldogs’ two goal advantage was soon restored early in the third period with a goal from forward, Andrew Hirst, at 42:46. A goal from Manchester’s James Archer took the Phoenix to within one goal once more, however, the Steeldogs managed to see the game out.
 
The first leg of the War of the Roses Challenge Cup finished 3-2 to the Sheffield Steeldogs.
 
In what was a feisty and fast paced second leg at the home of the Manchester Phoenix, neither side managed to find the back of the net.
 
The second leg finished as a goalless draw. The Sheffield Steeldogs were crowned War of the Roses Challenge Cup Champions, beating the Phoenix 3-2 (on agg.)
 
Steeldogs’ Coach, Andre Payette, said, “ Last night was an accumulation of two and a half years of hard work and winning the War of the Roses last night was a massive achievement, and one which was helped by all those involved in the club.”
