ALLEN, Texas – The Allen Americans improved to 2-0-0 on the season Sunday afternoon at Allen Event Center, and they had to work overtime to do it. The Americans edged the Arizona Sundogs 4-3, by virtue of winning the shootout after the two teams could not decide things through regulation and overtime. Allen won the shootout four goals to one as all four of their shooters scored (Scotty Howes, Jamie Schaafsma, Brett Skinner, Kip Brennan). “We can’t win them all by four,” Darryl Bootland said after the game. “It was a tough one tonight and we played hard and we got it done. Happy to give the fans a win.” The Americans got out to a slow start in the contest, giving up a short-handed goal early in the first period, just 2:24 into regulation. Adam Pineault got Allen on the board midway through the frame with his second goal in as many games, and the score remained 1-1 through one period. Jamie Schaafsma and Anthony Maiani had the assists. The second period saw the Americans come out and get the first two goals of the stanza. Jarret Lukin picked up his first goal of the season with a power-play tally to give the Americans a 2-1 lead with 6:01 left in the second. Brett Skinner and Adam Pineault earned the assists. The Americans got on the job shortly thereafter and Darryl Bootland scored his second of the season to increase the lead to 3-1 with four minutes left in the period. Jason Deitsch and Trevor Ludwig each picked up their first points of the season with assists on the goal. Arizona answered back less than two minutes later on a Jason Morgan goal that cut the Americans’ lead to one. Then a bench minor at the end of the period gave the Sundogs a power play to open the third with fresh ice. They cashed in 2:01 into the third frame to tie the game at 3-3 when Mario Larocque beat Steve Silverthorn with the assists from David Schlemko and Cody Purves. Allen would kill off successive minor penalties midway through the third, as the penalty kill did a good job of limiting Arizona’s opportunities. The two teams would skate to a stalemate the rest of the third and for the five minutes of overtime, setting up the Americans’ four-for-four performance in the shootout.
