PHILADELPHIA – I received a text message Thursday from my friend and colleague Lewis Bleiman in Philadelphia.
“I became a grandfather last night!”
Simple, direct and happy.
Lewis is PHN’s editor-in-chief for our photography staff and has been with us since the beginning ten years ago. We have known each other for those ten years and only on January 1, 2012 did we finally meet in person. As with so many on the PHN staff, relationships are more virtual than they are personal.
Meeting at the NHL host hotel in Philadelphia for the Winter Classic was like meeting a family member. Lewis was welcoming and warm and easy to get along with.
But he is also larger than life, big personality and warm and gruff and east coast aggressive. All things I remember from my time on the coast and all things I find endearing about Lewis.
But Thursday brought a singular moment for me with those simple words, “I became a grandfather last night!”
From 2500 miles away I heard the softening of the edges and the bear hug he must certainly have given his new granddaughter.
I also thought of a happy family in Philadelphia who welcomed a new life into their world.
We wish only happiness for Penelope Grace and her family and Lewis Bleiman.
And while the country lost 20 young souls last week we are graced with the arrival of a new life and new hope for the rest of us.
We congratulate Lewis on becoming a grandfather and wish him the best for his family and this little girl.
Pro Hockey News celebrates Penelope Grace’s birth and arrival into this world and hope she becomes a future reader of our pages and knows how happy she made her Pop Pop last night.
