K-Wings snap streak with 5-3 win over South Carolina

KALAMAZOO, Mich- Showing up from the opening school bell, the Kalamazoo Wings snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the South Carolina Stingrays in front of a sold out crowd of 5,152 at Wings Stadium during Education Day, presented by Bronson Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, Consumers Credit Union, McDonald’s and Rx Optical.   
The first period proved to be an eventful one, as the teams combined for five goals.
The K-Wings jumped out to a quick lead 3:01 into the game, when Brett Lysak (4th) was able to lift an Eric Kattelus pass over the shoulder of Shawn Hunwick. The assist extended Kattelus’ point streak to six games and his assist streak to four games, both team-highs.
Extending their lead just minutes later, Elgin Reid (4th) was able to take advantage of a power play with a slap shot from the left point.
Midway through the period, South Carolina was able to cut the lead to 2-1. Tyler Johnson notched his first goal of the season with a shot from fluttered over the blocker of Joel Martin.
Each team registered goals late in the period. Dustin Cloutier (2nd) regained a two-goal cushion for the K-Wings, but the lead would be cut back to single goal moments later, when South Carolina rang up a tally with 36 seconds left in the period with a goal from Mike Hamilton (6th).
Scoring the lone goal in second period, the K-Wings pushed the lead back to two goals with a marker from Aaron Clarke (3rd). The goal was Clarke’s 98th on his career, while Kory Karlander, who assisted on the tally, notched his 998 in his career point.
Alden Hirschfeld (4th) kept the Stingrays alive scoring unassisted midway in the third period; however, the K-Wings registered the final dagger at the 14:22 mark of the stanza, when Lysak earned his second goal of the game on his team-leading fifth lamp-lighter of the season.
Martin (4-3-0-0) earned the victory stopping 29 shots, while Hunwick (3-3-0-0) turned aside 25 shots in defeat.
The Stingrays will battle again at Wings Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 9th during Social Media Night and FANomenal Friday
