Checkers notebook: Charlotte takes second match in weekend brace of games

CHARLOTTE, NC – In the first exhibition game of the season, Charlotte went down 3-0 to the Admirals. Then, on Sunday, the Checkers reversed the result winning 4-3 with goals from Tim Wallace, Tommi Kivisto, Zach Boychuk and Victor Rask.
 
Charlotte jumped into a 3-0 lead with Wallace giving them the go ahead goal in the first period. This was Wallace’s first appearance in Checkers colors. Boychuk and Riley Nash provided the assist.
 
The second period saw rookie Tommi Kivisto put Charlotte further ahead when fellow Finn, Rasmus Rissanen’s pass gave Kivisto a wonderful opportunity on a breakaway, which he took. Boychuk added to the score just 1.42 later when Beau Schmitz’s shot rebound to him.
 
Riley Nash was given the primary assist on Boychuk’s goal his second of the evening.
 
Norfolk, the current Calder Cup Champions came back with a goal from Peter Holland at 10.49 of the second period. Victor Rask then made the score 4-1 after Zac Dalpe found him with a nice pass. The Admirals came back strongly in the third period with two unanswered goals. With the score 4-3, the Checkers had to battle in the final moments of the game.
 
With four and a half minutes of regulation left the Checkers special teams killed two Norfolk penalties.
 
New goalie, Dan Ellis, stopped all 20 shots that he faced while John Muse allowed three goals on 15 shots.
 
The Checkers practice Tuesday before departing for the regular season opener at Houston on October 13.
