Charlotte sweeps weekend set from Aeros

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Checkers swept Houston to record a 3-0 victory in an excellent matinee performance. Jeremy Shrugg got them on the board when he tipped a Bobby Sanguinetti shot past goalie Darcy Kuemper. Houston, who came into this series having lost only one game in their last eight are now four points behind Charlotte in the Southern Division.

It was a good afternoon all round for Charlotte with goalie Justin Peters keeping his second shutout of the season and his ninth career shutout in the AHL. Jeremy Welsh added a second goal during a power play after Houston’s Tyler Cuma struck Zach Dalpe.

“We’ve gotten back to the way we were playing when we were winning,” said Jeremy Welsh, whose team was 12-3-2 prior to hitting a wall just after Thanksgiving. “Sometimes you forget that work ethic and think that we’re a skilled team and it’s going to be easy.”

The power play had hardly begun when Zach Boychuk fired in a shot that hit a Houston player and bounced to Welsh who tucked the puck away. Tim Wallace added a third on an empty net.

“It was tough, and something a lot of guys aren’t used to,” said Zach Boychuk, whose two assists gave him sole possession of the team scoring lead with 23 points. “It was really different to get up, eat breakfast and come straight to the rink to play.”

“There’s always room for improvement, but we wanted to end this home stand on a positive note,” said coach Jeff Daniels.

Charlotte now travel to San Antonio Rampage for an afternoon game today before returning for two games at home against the Peoria RiverMen on December 20th and 21st at Time Warner Cable Arena, face-off 7.00PM.
