Charlotte loses third straight on the road

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Checkers’ trip to Texas proved to be very unsuccessful with a losses to Houston Aeros, Texas Stars and finally to San Antonio Rampage 5-2. Injuries also played a significant role in the proceedings with three players, Nicolas Blanchard, Zach Boychuk and Rasmus Rissanen all leaving the ice with injuries over the weekend.

Blanchard was hit by Justin Vaive of the Rampage and did not return. Boychuk was also hurt in the first period while Rasmusson missed both Saturdays and Sundays games.

Justin Peters in the Checkers goal made 26 saves and suffered his first loss in four games to the Rampage. Meanwhile Jacob Markstrom in the San Antonio goal had to make 49 saves. In the third period Charlotte outshot San Antonio 26-9 Markstrom saved 24 of those efforts.

Jared Gomes and Casey Wellman started the scoring for the Rampage in the first period with   Quinton Howden adding number three in the second. Bobby Sanguinetti drove the puck through traffic to put Charlotte on the board early in the third. This goal broke the 0-18 power-play situation the Charlotte found themselves in.

The Rampage restored their three goal lead when John Lee scored within minutes of the Checkers goal. With five minutes remaining in regulation play Justin Shugg scored Charlotte’s second goal which gave the team inspiration to push for more goals. The game went back and forth until San Antonio’s Drew Shore put the game out of reach, 5-2 Rampage.

The Checkers move on to Lake Erie to face the Monsters on Thursday and Friday January 3rd and 4th, 2013, before returning home for a Sunday game in Raleigh at the PNC Arena against the Admirals.
