Blainville-Boisbriand wins home opener by shutout against Sherbrooke

QUEBEC CITY, P.Q. — Coming back home after winning their first two games on the road the Armada was ready to play an exciting game in front of their fans. Two goals each by Tommy Giroux and Philippe Sanche led Blainville-Boisbriand to 6-0 victory over Sherbrooke.
Coming into the match, Broisbriand had lost their first three games at home and the expansion Sherbrooke team knew it wasn’t to be an easy task playing one of the best team in QMJHL.   Victim of nine goals against Rouyn-Noranda last Wednesday, the team coached by Justin Vallee entered the game wanting to play safe sending one man on the forecheck opting to play more defensively.
On the other end, Boisbriand played more aggressively trying to force their opponent to make mistakes. Works hard and things will happen say an old adage. Some other time, team can be beneficiary of lucky bounces.
Lucky bounce led to Blainville-Boisbriand first goal of the game. A shot from Philippe Sanche after a great pass from Jonathan Lavoie hit two skates before going in with only 1:16 gone in the opening period.
As the initial period went along the Armada seemed to take a territorial advantage forcing the new QMJHL team to commit turnovers.
The Armada took a 2-0 lead at 10:03 of the first period when Cedric Paquette’s shot from left faceoff circle hit both post before going in leaving no chance to Sherbrooke veteran netminder Jacob Gervais-Chouinard.
Already leading by two with two goals scored at even strength, Broisbriand added a third goal 1:06 later this time with a man advantage before the first period ended. Blainville-Boisbriand defenseman and captain Xavier Ouellet completed a perfect play with Christopher Clapperton for the Armada third goal.
With only 2:30 left to the initial period, Sherbrooke had their best opportunity of the period, to break the ice and get on board for the first time, against Blainville-Boisbriand, but instead, the Armada got the best scoring opportunity, forcing the Phoenix goaltender Gervais-Chouinard to make the best save, preventing further damage. Blainville-Boisbriand scored their three goals on 13 shots. Defending the net for the Armada Storm Phaneuf made only 6 saves.
Already scoring first two goals at even strength adding the third one with the help of power play, Blainville-Boisbriand open the second period with a goal in shorthanded situation. Trying to kill a penalty to teammate Aaron Hoyles, Tommy Giroux turned what was a two-on-one breakaway, following a turnover, in Armada fourth goal with a wrist shot, beating Phoenix goalie high on glove side with only 7:54 gone in middle frame.
Another turnover this time in Blainville-Boisbriand defensive zone ended with Armada fifth goal scored by Sanche his second of the game at 17:13.
Only one goal was scored in third period and it was the second of the game by Giroux on power play with only two seconds remaining to penalty to Phoenix first round draft in 2012. Giroux slides the puck between Sherbrooke goaltender Gervais-Choinard with only 2:12 gone in third periods.
Both teams will return to action on tonight. Sherbrooke will host Quebec, when Blainville-Boisbriand will receive the visit of Rouyn-Noranda Huskies.
