Bison extend lead at top

BASINGSTOKE, UK – The Bison extended their lead at the summit of the EPL to five points thanks to a 1-0 victory over the Guildford Flames in the top-of-the-table clash on Saturday.
Greg Owen scored the only goal of a tight contest in which Stevie Lyle recorded his third shut-out of the season making 27 saves.
It ended Guildford’s 10 game winning streak and extended the Herd’s home winning run to 10 games which equals the club record for the EPL.
“I think this was the best performance of the season and it is a massive win for us. It puts us in a nice position, but there is still plenty of hockey to be played,” said Bison player/coach Doug Sheppard.
On following night Basingstoke completed a four point weekend with a 5-1 victory over the Telford.
They raced to a 4-0 lead by the end of the first period as Greg Chambers, Owen, Sheppard and man-of-the-match Joe Greener all scored.
Chambers got an assist on the fourth goal his third point of the game which gave the Canadian his 300th league point for the Herd and became only sixth player to reach their milestone for the club.
The second session saw two further goals as Elliott Knell scored for the home side and Greener grabbed his second of the night to wrap up the scoring.
The games are now coming thick and fast for the Bison as next up is a Boxing Day clash with the Sheffield Steeldogs as the Herd look to make it 11 home wins on the trot against a side who have drawn a blank in the whole of December despite making changes to their line-up.
They will be hoping for a late Christmas present while the Bison want two more points in their quest for the title.
