The Rockford IceHogs fell 8-4 on Wednesday night to the Chicago Wolves on Wednesday night inside the BMO Center.
The Wolves jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the opening seven minutes. First, Gleb Trikozov was left alone in the crease and snapped the puck past Drew Commesso. Minutes later and while shorthanded, Chicago’s Gavin Bayreuther blocked a shot at the defensive blue line and skated in on a breakaway. The defenseman deked to his backhand and doubled the Chicago lead.
At 10:06 of the 1st, Josiah Slavin located a rebound outside the crease and shoveled the 3-0 goal home.
Just 28 seconds into the 2nd period, the Hogs got on the board with a tenacious effort from Gavin Hayes. The Hogs’ forward was stoned on his first two tries, then finally on his third attempt slid the puck past Cayden Primeau in net for the Wolves.
Chicago regained its three-goal lead on the power play. Domenick Fensore’s shot from the blue line was deflected by Evan Vierling to build the advantage to 4-1.
Back on another 2nd period power play, Ronan Seeley gathered in a cross-zone pass and snapped his shot over Commesso’s right pad and extended the lead to 5-1 Chicago.
At 11:29 of the middle period, Rockford scored a shorthanded goal of its own to cut the score to 5-2. Dominic Toninato earned his second assist of the night, when Samuel Savoie deflected in his shot out of the air. Skyler Brind’Amour responded for the Wolves with a break away goal.
Before the period ended, a Kevin Korchinski blast banked off the back glass and off of Primeau to bring the Hogs back to 6-3.
After an aggressive goaltending pull from the IceHogs with 17 minutes left in regulation the Wolves scored an empty-netter for a 7-3 lead. Hayes checked in with his second of the night to respond and cut the deficit to three midway through the 3rd.
Chicago’s Blake Biondi got in behind the Rockford defense on an aerial pass and scored on the breakaway to push the Wolves up 8-4.
