ROSEMONT, IL The Chicago Wolves sink in three goals within 93 seconds during the first period against their Central Division rivals the Milwaukee Adirmals Saturday night at Allstate Arena. The Wolves playing a double header against Milwaukee after winning the night before in Milwaukee 3-2.
Chicago forwards David Gust, Stefan Noesen, Maxim Letunov, Andrew Poturalski, C.J Smith, Stelio Mattheos scored for the Wolves who are (2-1-0-0) .
Gust an Orland Park, IL resident, scored the first goal at 16:46 of the first. Gust found himself near the left corner between the goal line and the circle. He cannoned a wrister that beat Milwaukee goaltender Devin Cooley. Wolves rookie defenseman Artyom Serikov, a 20-year-old Russia native, earned his first North American professional point with the primary assist.
The game would have another first in Wolves History. Lake Forest resident Samantha Hiller, one of only 10 female officials the American Hockey League acquired this season, made her AHL debut Saturday evening. Only one week after Katie Guay became the first female to officiate an AHL or NHL game.
The Wolves expanded their lead 2-0 at 17:52 when Noesen was in the front zone of Cooley and puts it home for a rebound after Cooley blocked defenseman Cavan Fitzgerald’s shot from the point.
Letunov would close the Wolves first-period of goals at 18:19 with his first for the season. Spencer Smallman got a pass in the left circle from Sam Miletic. Cooley would face against Smallman and land on the ice. Smallman would then sneak the puck to Letunov in the slot and would leave a open net.
Poturalski the 2021-22 Wolves captain, raised the lead to 4-0 at 4:47 in the second. The AHL’s 2021 scoring champion ripped a shot from the top of the right circle to earn a power-play goal.
The Wolves continued to hunt when Mattheos produced hist first goal of the season at 1:09 of the third. Chicago leading comfortably with a 5-0 margin. He would anchor in a rebound after Wolves forward Jack Drury appeared to launch a one timer across the the goal line.
Smith adds a third goal of the season when he hovered a Poturalski pass into the net from the outside of the crease to put the Wolves up 6-0 in the third.
But Milwaukee (1-2-0-0) would rain on the shutout with a lone goal from Joseph LaBate with 1:09 remaining in regulation. Alex Lyon (1-1-0) protect 17 shots to earn the win.
Cooley (1-2-0) would stop nine of the 13 shots before being taken out and replaced with Poturalski in the second period goal. Parker Gahagen would make 22 saves.
The Wolves start a three-game road trip at Grand Rapids starting Wednesday, but will return to Allstate Arena Saturday, Nov 6 when they host the Manitoba Moose.
