ROSEMONT, IL – The Iowa Wild (3-14-1-2, 9 points) were defeated by the Chicago Wolves (8-3-1-1, 18 points) 2-1 in front of 12,617 fans on Sunday afternoon at Allstate Arena. Trailing 1-0 heading into the final period, Chicago’s Jacob Doty and Eriah Hayes each scored to push the Wolves past Iowa. Chicago goalie Jordan Binnington (6-1-1) stopped 15 of 16 shots for the win. Despite making 40 saves, Iowa goalie Leland Irving (2-6-2) took the loss, which extended the team’s record-setting winless skid to ten games (0-9-0-1). Zack Mitchell scored Iowa’s lone goal. The Wild travels to Grand Rapids for a 6 p.m. (CT) puck drop with the Griffins on Wednesday.
After a scoreless first period of play, Iowa opened up the scoring at 5:25 of the second period, taking a 1-0 lead off Zack Mitchell’s fourth goal of the year. Center Grayson Downing set up right wing Christoph Bertschy with an outlet pass in the Iowa zone. Bertschy pushed the puck quickly through center and into the Wolves zone. Bertschy sauced a cross-crease pass to Mitchell, who swatted the puck out of mid-air and past goalie Jordan Binnington.
The Wolves tied the game early in the final frame, as Eriah Hayes finished off a centering pass from Evan Trupp at 4:05. The play started with a dump in by Yannick Veilleuex, who raced in and tipped the puck to Trupp. The Wolves forward found Hayes in the slot for a quick wrist shot that spoiled Leland Irving’s shutout bid, his first goal of the season. Chicago pushed ahead 2-1 at 12:57 of the third period as Jacob Duty scored his second goal of the season. Defenseman Jordan Schmaltz played the puck down low in the Iowa corner to Cody Beach, who snapped a pass to the Wild crease. Doty finished the play with a one timer past Irving for the win.
