Wolves Roll with 12th Straight Win Against Admirals

ROSEMONT,IL The Chicago Wolves were red hot as they produced a power-play goal and a shorthanded goal in the second period to earn a 4-2 victory over the visiting Milwaukee Admirals Saturday evening at the Allstate Arena.

Wolves forwards David Gust, Jamieson Rees, David Cotton and Spencer Smallman scored for the Wolves (20-4-1-1) who are leading the Central Division in the American Hockey League.

Last night’s win tied a 22-year-old team record when John Anderson’s 1999-2000 team won 12 in a row to make their way to the 2000 Turner Cup Championship.

Wolves goaltender Alex Lyon (9-1-1) had 1.79 goals against average and earned his sixth straight win, stopping 29 of 31 shots against the Admirals. Lyon ranks third in the AHL in wins.

Wolves opened the scoring at 16:19 of the first. The Admirals couldn’t contain a short breakout pass in their zone. Gust would take matters in his own hands and took the opportunity to skate in and rocket a shot past Admirals goaltender Connor Ingram for his 50th career AHL goal.

Milwaukee (10-13-2-0) would tie the game at 11:42 of the second when former Chicago Wolves defenseman Jeremy Davies blazed a wrist shot that went through traffic for a power-play goal.

The Wolves would answer with a power-play goal of their own at 14:03. Rees would get a pass when defenseman Artyom Serikov tried to pass the puck to Sam Miletic. Milwaukee would block that opportunity giving Serikov an opportunity to shoot the puck which tipped off Rees’.

The Wolves would attack again and add to their lead 3-1. Cotton would produce a shorthanded goal with 2:39 left in the second period. Spencer Smallman would get a pass in the defense zone past two defenders giving him a breakaway and do a backhand shot over Ingram.

Milwaukee would then make it 3-2 with 2:32 to play.  Graham Knott would tip in a Rocco Grimaldi bomb blast when the Admirals pulled the goalie for an extra attacker to get a 6-on-4 advantage.

The Wolves would come back to feast on the Admirals with an empty net. Smallman buried a shot with 1:54 left. Ingram (8-8-2) posted 29 saves in the loss.

The Wolves look to keep the franchise record going when they head to Cleveland for a 6 p.m. game  Wednesday. The Wolves return to Allstate Arena on Saturday, Jan. 1, to face the Rockford IceHogs in the Chicago New Year’s Classic, presented by Planet Fitness.
