ROSEMONT, Ill The Chicago Wolves were on a mission to win and they did just that on a chilly Thursday afternoon at the Allstate Arena against the Texas Stars. The game started out when Wolves right wing Ty Rattie had a shot on Stars goaltender John Muse, but just when Muse could put a glove on it Wolves right wing Jordan Caron came in and got the rebound and lit the lamp for a 1-0 start.
The Wolves were not done, at 8:39, Wolves right winger Eriah Hayes got a power-play goal to put the Wolves up 2-0 in the first period.
Then at 13:53 Chicago added another to the board when Wolves right winger Zach O’Brien picked up a turnover at center ice and led a three-man breakaway coming down the ice with a pass to center Ivan Barbashev then skates in the Texas zone with a pass to Wolves left winger Yakknick Veilleux then sailed it across to O’Brien who notched it home for a 3-0 lead.
Texas would then regain their momentum by replacing goaltender John Muse and bringing in backup Jack Campbell.
In the third period, Texas looked fearless and more competitive midway through the third when Brett Richie got a shot past Wolves goaltender Pheonix Coplay for a power play goal at 11:28.
Center Greg Rallo would then cut the Texas deficit to one at 13:32.
Texas tied it up at three all at 2:26 when Stars defenseman Mattias Backman’s get’s a one-timer past Coplay pushing the goal to overtime followed by a shootout.
Wolves rookie defenseman Jordan Schmaltz put home the winner for the Wolves, making his first professional shootout a stellar performance coming in on Campbell with a fake move before lifting a backhand on the top-shelf.
Coplay stopped 37 of 40 shots against Texas including the three attempts in the shootout for the 4-3 win.
The Wolves will try and earn another win Saturday when the Rockford IceHogs come into town for an Illinois Lottery Cup game on Epilepsy Awareness Night, presented by Heidenhain, at 7 p.m.
