CHARLOTTE, NC – On Saturday evening these two teams could only score one goal between them, Sunday was a completely different story. With the win Chicago closed the gap in the Mid West Division; they are now only one point behind Charlotte with two games in hand.
The Wolves went ahead through Michaele Davis, after just two minutes in the first period. Ten minutes later Chicago went further ahead with a Tim Miller goal. Charlotte then got on the board with a fine individual effort by Justin Shugg.
Early in the second period A. J. Jenks tied the game when he jumped on a rebound to beat Wolves goalie Matt Climie. The situation however was temporary, Chicago then scored two goals within three minutes, they now led 4-2. Michaele Davis scored Chicago’s third goal and Mark Mancari, top scorer for the Wolves got number four.
In the third period, Chicago defenseman Kevin Connauton scored his 11th goal of the season to give the Wolves a 5-2 advantage. Justin Soryal scored Charlotte’s third goal before Mark Mancari, who had 5 points in three games against Charlotte, scored an empty-netter.
When the score was 5-3 to Chicago, Charlotte thought they had scored a fourth, which would have made for a grandstand finish. After a lot of discussion between the officials the goal was disallowed for a foul on goalie Matt Climie. The Wolves goalie made 32 saves while John Muse saved 20 shots but allowed 5 goals, a career high.
Of the last eight games, Charlotte have been on the road for seven of them, they now return home to face AHL’s top team the Oklahoma City Barons on February 24 and 25.
