READING, PA – The Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs and the Michigan Wolverines will face off in the NCAA Frozen Four Championship game Saturday night in St. Paul, Minnesota after winning their semi-final games over Notre Dame and North Dakota 4-3 and 2-0 respectively.
The Bulldogs scored three first period goals and held on for the 4-3 win. Notre Dame scored the first goal of the game 49 seconds into the contest thanks to Jeff Costello, but Minnesota-Duluth’s offense was too much for the Irish in the first and second periods. The Bulldogs held a 4-2 lead heading into the third period but Notre Dame came on strong outshooting MDU 15-2 in the period, but could only muster one more goal the rest of the way. The Bulldogs go back to the championship game for the first time since 1984, their only other title shot. They lost that game to Bowling Green in triple overtime.
In the other semi-final, Michigan goaltender Shawn Hunwick made 40 saves for his fourth shutout of the season to propel the Wolverines into the title game. They will look for a 10th title, an NCAA record. The last time Michigan played in the title game they defeated Boston College in 1998 3-2 in overtime.
