Telford Tigers fans have been urged to back the team against Manchester and Swindon this weekend, after a consortium of local businesses acquired the club’s assets.
The new company will now fund and run the English Premier League club, starting with this weekend’s games. The team are currently six points clear at the top of the standings.
Paul Thomason, former Telford Tigers General Manager, has been instrumental in securing the club’s future over the previous fortnight.
He said: “It is a huge relief for me personally that, with the generous support of local businesses, we are able to take Telford Tigers forward.
“We have been overwhelmed by the messages of support from fans, sponsors and potential financial partners.
“Most importantly, I would like to thank the Telford Tigers coach, Tom Watkins, and the players for their incredible dedication over the last few weeks.
“The fans have also been fantastic and shown unwavering support. Let’s concentrate on two great games of ice hockey against Manchester and Swindon.”
Former Tigers stick boy Wayne Scholes will continue to be one of the key sponsors.
He said: “I am relieved that the future of the club is resolved. We can concentrate on what matters most, a successful Tigers ice hockey team.
“I want to add my thanks to Paul, Tom and all the players for staying focused through this difficult period.
“I would also pay tribute to the fans for rallying behind the team at such a difficult time. Without them the Tigers would not be the great club we all love.”
The consortium includes three local businesses, plus Wayne Scholes, all of whom have ploughed funds into the club.
Mr Thomason added: “I am immensely grateful that all these great partners of Telford Tigers have come forward and agreed to help the club.
“Their support is crucial in making ice hockey a long-term and sustainable part of the sporting scene in Telford.”
The Tigers travel to face Manchester Phoenix on Saturday, before hosting Swindon Wildcats at Telford Ice Rink on Sunday (6pm).
