SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Winnepeg Jets defeated the San Jose Sharks with help from a hat trick by Nikolaj Ehlers, with a final score of 5-3. The hat trick was Ehler’s second in his last 12 games.
Dustin Byfuglien scored first for the Jets with an unassisted goal only 51 seconds into the game. Less than a minute later, Evander Kane evened the score with Sharks goal. Joe Pavelski scored the go-ahead goal at 11:27. The lead only lasted a minute, when Ehlers scored his first goal of the night for the equalizer, then Mason Appleton scored again at 13:44. The Jets lead 3-2 going into the first intermission.
The score remained 3-2 until the last six seconds of the second period, when Joonas Donskoi’s shot tied the game going into the third period.
Ehlers scored the only two goals of the third period for the Jets. An empty-net goal with a minute remaining in the game, would be the hat trick for Ehlers, and would seal the 5-3 game for the Jets.
