In Brooklyn Tuesday night, the Detroit Red Wings trailed the New York Islanders, 3-2, before rallying for four unanswered goals in a 6-3 win.
It wasn’t until the midway mark of the third period that the Wings took the lead on a goal
from Trevor Daley to make it 4-3.
Martin Frk, Gustav Nyquist, Anthony Mantha, Mike Green and Luke Glendening struck for goals in the Detroit win.
Anders Lee, Ryan Pulock and Josh Bailey scored for the Isles in the loss.
“I liked our first two periods. I just didn’t think we were very good in the third,” the Islanders’ John Tavares said. “We played right into their hands. We were a little sloppy and got too aggressive at times. It’s kind of been the same story. We play some good hockey and then we give too many point-blank chances and then we rely on our goalies to make grade A saves multiple times. Good first two periods. Obviously maybe we deserved a better fate but we didn’t go out and dictate in the third like we needed to.”
The loss dropped New York to 18-13-3 and they are 3-6-1 in their last 10 games.
Petr Mrazek made 34 saves to pick up the win.
The third period started with the teams locked up at 3-3 but the Red Wings found their defensive game and bottled up the Isles for most of the final 20 minutes.
“We just talked about the fact that [the first two periods] wasn’t good enough and our guys had an understanding of it. You don’t want to not play good enough, but we weren’t good enough,” Wings head coach Jeff Blashill said. “Through the first two periods we were fortunate to be in the game. I thought we came out in the third and played great. I thought we really played hard, played to win, we made lots of plays, we skated and we won lots of puck battles.”

Thomas Greiss took the loss on 16 saves.
“I don’t think we were in our zone very much today to be honest with you. We had the puck, we should have had the lead. Credit to them, they played a pretty good third, actually. We played two really good periods, thought we were fine. It’s disappointing,” Islanders head coach Doug Weight said after the loss.
