Wilkes-Barre/Scranton outlasts St. John’s, 2-1

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins didn’t get off to an ideal start on Tuesday night against the St. John’s IceCaps, but their finish was picture perfect as the Penguins topped the IceCaps, 2-1, at Mile One Centre.

St. John’s wasted no time to get things going, scoring 21 seconds into the game. Gabriel Dumont was credited with his 10th goal of the season as the IceCaps took the early 1-0 lead.

Josh Archibald looked to have tied the score midway through the opening frame. However, the goal was instantly waived off by the official due to a high-stick, a non-reviewable play. WBS Penguins

There was no denying the Penguins the next time the puck went into the IceCaps’ net, when Derrick Pouliot struck on the power play for his sixth goal of the season at 8:08 of the second period, tying the game, 1-1.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton took a 2-1 lead when a loose puck found its way onto the stick of Jean-Sébastien Dea, who then rifled it past St. John’s goaltender Zach Fucale at 3:21 of the third.

Dea’s goal stood as the game-winner after Matt Murray and the Penguins survived a late-game penalty kill as the IceCaps pushed to try and tie the game. Dea tied teammate Scott Wilson for the league-lead in game-winning goals (5) on the season.

Murray made 33 saves in the game, all of which coming after allowing the game’s first goal to Dumont. Murray is 8-4-0-0 this season when allowing the game’s first goal, and is now 16-4-0-0 overall. Fucale finished the game with 21 saves.
