In St Paul, the Minnesota Wild’s seven-game win streak came to an end on Thursday, when Evgeni Malkin scored with 63 seconds left in extra time for a 4-3 win to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Casey DeSmith made 28 saves in the Pens win.
“Really happy for Casey,” Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said. “He’s working hard and trying to keep his game at the top level. He gets a start like this in an important game against a real good team that’s won an awful lot of games lately, and I thought he made some big saves for us throughout the course of the game. I thought he played real well. I’m happy for him.”
Rickard Rakell scored a pair of goals for the Penguins.
Rakell opened the scoring, giving the Pens a 1-0 lead in he first period.
Matt Dumba tied it.
“I wanted to put it away a little bit better than that, but it crossed the line,” Dumba said.
Jordan Greenway also scored for the Wild.
Jake Guentzel added a single marker for Pittsburgh in regulation.
“I mean, just a great face-off play,” Guentzel said. “Just had my stick on the ice and right on my stick. So definitely one I’ll take here.”
Minnesota’s Kirill Kaprizov scored early in the third period to tie the game, 3-3, and to force the extra session.
Cam Talbot made 35 saves in the Wild loss.
“He never seems to score an insignificant point or goal,” Talbot said of Kaprizov. “He always gets us back in the game, ties the game late, scores the OT winner. He’s always finding ways to make an impact on the game. And it’s never in those games that we’re already up or something like that. He’s not looking for his cookies or anything like that. He comes to play when the game is on the line. That’s why he’s a superstar.”
