In St Paul, Marcus Foligno struck for two goals for the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday; they were the first and last goals of regulation. The last one forced extra time as the Wild were trailing the Ottawa Senators, 4-3, late in the game.
Minnesota’s Kirill Kaprizov completed the comeback with his first goal of the season in extra time for the 5-4 win.
“I think he said to [assistant Bob Woods] or [assistant Brett McLean] after the game it feels like his first goal ever,” Wild head coach Dean Evason said. “He’s pretty excited, obviously. It’s one thing for him to be excited, but to see his teammates, that’s exciting for us.”
Cam Talbot made 24 saves for the Wild win.
Drake Batherson had a goal and two points for the Senators.
Foligno and Calen Addison scored in the first period for a 2-0 Wild lead.
“At the end of the day, they don’t ask how and quite honestly, I don’t care either,” Addison said. “That was something I’ll never forget for sure. It’s kind of crazy that on Hockey Fights Cancer, my grandpa passed away seven years ago to the day today, and to get my first goal on that night is pretty special. That one’s for him for sure.”
Nick Paul got the Senators on the board after falling behind by two.
Josh Norris knotted the game at 3-3 and Chris Tierney gave Ottawa a 4-3 lead.
“We don’t give up in here, and our mentality in the locker room is to keep working, keep working,” Tierney said. “It doesn’t matter what the score is, we’re going to play the same way, and if we play that way, we’re going to come back in a lot of games.”
Nico Sturm also scored for Minnesota.
“It’s just nice to see us fight back,” Foligno said. “That’s the mentality of the group this year. We don’t stop. It’s good to have that for sure. But we want to win games by two goals, three goals and have that feeling where we have a lead and can shut it down.”
Filip Gustavsson made 38 saves in the Sens loss.
