In St Paul, Connor McDavid scored to tie the game with the Minnesota Wild at 4-4 in the third period, after the Edmonton Oilers trailed 4-2.
The Wild responded with goals from Luke Kunin and Eric Staal to push Minnesota back into the lead, 6-4.
A late goal from James Neal was not enough to get the Oilers any closer.
Kaapo Kahkonen made 28 saves to preserve the win for Minnesota.
“It was a pretty sloppy game from both teams, but I have no problem with sloppy games as long as we’re the team with the higher number at the end,” Wild coach Bruce Boudreau said.
The Oilers are 2-5-1 in its past eight.
“We’re not panicking in here,” McDavid said. “We lost three games, I think we’re the last team in the League to lose three in a row, so, all teams have gone through it and we’re going through it now.”
Leon Draisaitl, Gaetan Haas and Oscar Klefbom also scored for Edmonton.
“We spend so much energy fighting back, and that’s a positive that we can do that,” Draisaitl said. “But first of all, we do it too often and too much, and if you fight that hard to come back in, you want to at least get rewarded in some type of way, so you find ways to shut it down more.”
Minnesota’s Marcus Foligno, Ryan Donato, Jordan Greenway, and Jason Zucker also scored in the win.
The Wild improved to 15-12-5.
“There were good chances, like really good chances, but in the end you’d like to see some saves there,” Oilers head coach Dave Tippett said.
Mike Smith made 20 saves in the loss.
“We have to dig in here,” McDavid said. “We’re in a bit of a rut. It starts with the top guys, all the way down through the lineup. I’ve got be better. That’s pretty much it.”
