Wild edge Flyers, 3-2, in OT Zuccarello wins in extra session

In St Paul, Mats Zuccarello scored with 2:08 gone in extra time on Thursday night to give the Minnesota Wild a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

“We’ve been struggling as of late,” Zuccarello said. “Great job [by] the guys. [We showed] some fire and got the boys going. I thought we played a really good game, but they played hard. They block shots and make it hard for us. But we could have scored a couple more and put the game away, but that was an important two points for us.”

The extra session was necessary when Tony DeAngelo tied the game, 2-2, late in the third period for Philadelphia.

The Flyers dropped to 20-21-9.

Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 saves in the Wild win.

The Wild’s Matt Boldy hit fore a double in regulation. His first goal tied the game, 1-1, in the second period.

Noah Cates staked the Flyers to a 1-0 lead in the first period.

“This was a game of two willing teams,” Philadelphia coach John Tortorella said. “That’s a hard team, hard building to play in. Happy we get a point, but it leaves you wanting more. Same type of situation, we go down and have a great chance. We don’t score. They come right down and score on us.

“We’re trying, but I respect how we played. I respect how they played. It was a hard-fought game.”

Minnesota improved to 26-17-4.

Boldy’s second strike came in the third period to give the Wild a 2-1 lead at the time.

“It was a good game for everyone,” Boldy said. “I think it’s the game we needed to play. Hard. Ended up being kind of a close one, back and forth, but yeah, I think it was a big game for us and a lot of guys played really well.”

FOCOCarter Hart made 20 saves in the loss.

“We’ve got to find ways to win more games,” DeAngelo said. ” … You’ve got to find a way to win some of these games in overtime. We’re doing a good job of staying in every game and giving ourselves a chance to win, but not finishing the job enough.”
