What is a Stanley Cup win worth?

That question was answered on Saturday.

At least for a rookie goaltender who rode off the distant horizon and settled into a small patch of blue paint in St Louis, the value is roughly $4.4 million for each of the next two years.

Jordan Binnington, the rookie St Louis Blues goalie who captured the hearts and the Stanley Cup for the Blues in a first to last epic, inked a two-year deal on Saturday.

“I’m happy to get this deal done with the St. Louis Blues,” Binnington was quoted saying on the Blues website. “To the city of St. Louis, thank you for welcoming me in and trusting me to do me. I’m excited and motivated to keep doing my job and keep bringing success to the St. Louis Blues organization.”

In this season’s playoff run, Binnington was 16-10 with a 2.46 GAA, .914 save percentage and one shutout through 26 games.

As the year turned to 2019, the Blues found themselves floundering in last place in the NHL; that in itself is an accomplishment in a league with the Ottawa Senators, Los Angeles Kings and Buffalo Sabres this year.

Binnington was called up from the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League and started an improbable run going 24-5-1 with a 1.89 goals-against average, .927 save percentage and five shutouts in 32 regular-season games.

“We are pleased to have Jordan signed for two more years,” Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said. “His play was outstanding and we look forward to seeing him continue to be a major contributor for our team.”

A two-year deal seems to accomplish two points, one for each side.

If Binnington is lightning the Blues caught in a bottle, not to be equaled, then they have a short, two-year contract of modest costs.

If Binnington is the real deal, then the goalie has a short two-year proposal and can turn that modest rate into bigger bucks when the salary cap goes up in two years.

Either, way, this is a win-win for the Blues and their new goalie.
