Walters, Walleye come back to down Florida

TOLEDO, OH – Dane Walters scored twice and added an assist as the Toledo Walleye took the first of two games against Florida 6-4 Friday night at the Huntington Center. Toledo has an overall record of 47-14-2-1 and is 24-5-1-1 at home. Toledo has won ten straight home contests.

Toledo out shot Florida in the first period 8-5 with neither team finding the back of the net. The second period was a different story as the two teams combined for six goals. The first two came from the visiting Everblades who had a 2-0 lead inside the first five minutes of the period.

The Walleye power play got Toledo on the board as J.P LaFontaine scored his 12th at 5:37 of the second period. Walters slammed in a one-timer off of a pass from Shane Berschbach for his 13th of the season at 11:01 to tie the game at two. Defenseman Matt Caito then gave the Walleye a lead at 14:11 when his wrist shot went through the pads of Everblades goaltender Anthony Peters.

Florida tied the game before the end of the second before Walters was at it again tipping a shot from Justin Agosta on the power play at 2:12 of the third period for another power play goal and a 4-3 lead. In his first pro game, Charlie O’Connor deflected in his first professional strike at 11:55 for a two goal Walleye lead. Florida closed to within one goal before Tylor Spink capped the scoring with his 24th into an empty net.

Walleye Notes: Goaltender Cal Heeter stopped 28 of Florida’s 32 shots and has a record of 13-1-0-0 on the season… Shane Berschbach’s three assist night ties him with Tyler Barnes (2014-15) for the most points (74) in a single season of Walleye history… Toledo is unbeaten in eleven straight home games (10-0-1).
