Walleye power past Fuel

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Joel Chouinard’s power play goal in the third period sent Toledo to a 4-3 win Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis. Toledo has an overall record of 16-7-1-3 and 11-5-1-2 on the road.

Toledo grabbed the first goal of the game when Josh Shalla (5th) found the back of the net with a power play goal at 5:29 of the first period. Indy did send 17 shots on goal in the first period but Jeff Lerg stopped all 17 for a 1-0 Toledo lead following one period of play.

The Fuel came out to start the second period with a pair of goals. The first came just 16 seconds into the period and then a power play goal at 2:27 to take a 2-1 lead. Alden Hirschfeld added to his team leading goal with number 14 at 6:32 of the period beating Fuel goaltender Shane Owen with a backhand shot. A power play goal from Dominic Zombo (3rd) at 8:52 put the Walleye back in front 3-2. Indy used a goal at 17:21 from Daniel Champini tied the game at 3 after two periods.

The power play put Toledo in front for good when Joel Chouinard (4th) blasted in a one-timer at 10:37 of the third period. The power play finished the game with three goals in four chances.

Walleye Notes: Goaltender Jeff Lerg made his sixth straight start stopping 33 of 36 shots and has a record of 11-3-2. The goal at 16 seconds of the second period, ended Jeff Lerg’s shutout streak at 112 minutes and 58 seconds. He hadn’t allowed a goal since the second period in Brampton on Thursday.
