Jake Paterson got the nod for the Walleye tonight in their first game of a best-of-seven series against Kalamazoo. He stopped 27 of the 30 shots he faced.
Kalamazoo got on the board early at 3:33 of the first period when Blake Kessel beat Jake Paterson. Kyle Bonis knotted the game at one on a goal assisted by Shane Berschbach and Dane Walters with 6:19 left in the first. The scoring in the first continued when Evan Rankin backhanded a shot, beating Kalamazoo netminder Nick Riopel. Just 30 seconds later, Tylor Spink deflected a pass in from Matt Caito and Jordan Hill, pushing the lead to 3-1.
Shane Berschbach extended the Walleye lead to 4-1 at 8:34 of the second on a wrist shot assisted by Beau Schmitz. Kalamazoo got one back with 5:32 remaining in the second, closing their deficit to 4-2.
Kalamazoo netted another one with 16:24 remaining in the third, closing the Walleye lead to 4-3. However, the Walleye held onto the lead to take game one in the series.
