Walleye fall in OT at Wheeling

WHEELING, WV – Alden Hirschfeld led the way with a pair of goals as the Walleye picked up a point in a 7-6 overtime loss Wednesday night in Wheeling. Toledo has an overall record of 30-8-1-1 and is 18-6-1-0 on the road.

Zach Nastasiuk set up Hirschfeld who went top shelf with a wrist shot at 6:40 for his 13th goal of the season. Tylor Spink (15th) cut in front of the Wheeling net and went to the backhand beating Nailers goaltender Doug Carr to give Toledo a 2-0 lead at 8:19 of the opening period. Wheeling countered with a goal from Christian Hilbrich at 10:14, but the Walleye led 2-1 after the first.

It didn’t take long as Wheeling tied the game just 16 seconds into the second periodon a goal by Gage Quinney. Tyson Spink (19th) pushed Toledo back in front when he scored right in front of the Wheeling net at 5:49. Back to back Wheeling goals from Jordan Kwas and Tyler Currier had the Nailers in front 4-3 through 13:05 of the period. Shane Berschbach fed a goal mouth pass to Hirschfeld for the second goal of the game for Hirschfeld at 15:01.

A major penalty on Danny Fick of Wheeling gave the Walleye a five minute power play late in the second period in which Toledo would capitalize. Nathan Moon would score his first in a Walleye uniform at 17:10. Moon did it again at 18:54 following up his own rebound for a 6-4 lead after two periods.

Wheeling crept to within a goal with a power play goal by Cody Wydo at 5:22 of the third period before tying the game with just 18 seconds left in the game on a goal from defenseman Kevin Schultze. Wheeling’s Hilbrich tipped a pass between the pads of Jake Paterson at 4:03 of overtime for the game-winner.

Walleye Notes: Goaltender Jake Paterson stopped 28 of the 35 shots he faced and has a record of 20-6-1-1 this season… Toledo is 3-3-1-0 against Wheeling this year… The overtime loss was the first of the season for the Walleye (5-1 in OT this year).
