Walleye double up on Nailers

WHEELING, WV – Zach Nastasiuk scored twice and Shane Berschbach set a new Walleye single season record as Toledo defeat the Nailers 6-3 Sunday in Wheeling. Toledo has an overall record of 43-14-2-1 and is 23-9-1-0 on the road.

On the first shift of the game Toledo would take a 1-0 as Nastasiuk scored his 10th goal of the season when he sent a perfect wrist into the top right corner of the net just 28 seconds into the game. Berschbach and Alden Hirschfeld assisted on the score, meaning that goal set a new Walleye single season record for assists for Berschbach with 49 passing his old mark of 48 set in 2014-15.

The second period started the same as the first as Tylor Spink buried a top shelf wrist shot for his 22nd of the season just 1:10 in for a 2-0 lead. Wheeling countered with the power play finally scoring on their fifth advantage of the game at 5:59 of the second period. The Nailers tied the game at 17:36 of the second before Hirschfeld sent a perfect pass to the Wheeling to spring Berschbach on a breakaway. Berschbach went backhand through the pads of Wheeling goaltender Sean Maguire at 19:31 for a 3-2 lead after two periods.

In the third period, Wheeling scored early to even the game at three apiece. Beau Schmitz blasted a one-timer that beat Maguire, hit the near side post and laid in the crease until Jordan Hill slammed in his second goal of the season at 4:08. With Jordan Hill in the penalty box, Nastasiuk blocked a shot at the blue line and raced down the ice to score a shorthanded goal at 15:44 of the third period. Alden Hirschfeld netted his 23rd of the season when he scored into an empty net to create the final.

Walleye Notes: Goaltender Jeff Lerg finished with 18 saves on 24 Wheeling shots and has a season record of 3-1-1-0… Toledo finished the year 6-3-1 vs. Wheeling…. Nastasiuk’s shorthanded goal was the 9th scored by the Walleye this year… Toledo has a record of 9-1-0 in games played on Sundays.
