CINCINNATI, OH -Evan Rankin scored twice including the game-winning goal at 3:19 of overtime to lead the Walleye to a 4-3 win Saturday night at Cincinnati. Toledo has a season record of 9-3-0-0 and is 8-2-0-0 on the road.
Cincinnati got the jump on the Walleye in the first period as forward Andrew Yogan beat Walleye goaltender Cal Heeter with a backhand shot at 1:32. The Cyclones struck for a power play goal at 7:38 and then another even strength one at 11:19 to put the Walleye behind 3-0 after one period.
Toledo closed the gap to two goals when Nolan Zajac (3rd goal of season) sent a wrist shot into the net 7:42 into the second period. Alex Globke sent a perfect pass across the Cincinnati zone to set up the Zajac goal. The Walleye went into the third period trailing 3-1.
Evan Rankin (2nd) scored at 2:01 of the third period to make it a one goal game. The comeback was complete for Toledo when in a scramble in front of the Cincinnati net resulted in Tyler Sikura (5th) slamming in the tying goal with 4:07 left in the third period.
The overtime session saw Cal Heeter hold the game tied when he stopped Peter Leblanc on a penalty shot at 1:43. AJ Jenks sent a pass across the Cincinnati zone that Evan Rankin one-timed into the Cincinnati net for the win.
Walleye Notes: Goaltender Cal Heeter stopped 25 of the 28 shots he faced and has a record of 6-0-0-0 on the season. Heeter is the first Walleye goaltender to start a season with six straight wins… Tonight was the first time that the Walleye have erased a deficit heading to the third period (1-3-0).
