Walleye clip Komets in OT

TOLEDO, OH – The Walleye extended their win streak to eight straight games on Tuesday morning at the Huntington Center, beating out the Fort Wayne Komets by a score of 5-4 in overtime. Four of the five goals were scored on special teams for the Fish, three on power plays and one shorthanded. The Walleye are now 16-3-0-0 on the season and Toledo Walleye logo8-1 at home. This marks the best start in Toledo ECHL history and ties a Walleye record of eight straight wins, set in 2009 from December 11 to December 29.

Jacob MacDonald (5th) got the scoring going early for the Walleye, netting a power play goal at 6:09 of the first period. A.J. Jenks and Shane Berschbach were credited with the assists. Jenks (9th) made it a 2-0 game at 9:01 of the first on a shorthanded strike that sneaked past Komets goaltender Eric Hartzell. Alden Hirschfeld was credited with the assist.

Fort Wayne got on the board 49 seconds in the second, making it a 2-1 game, on a goal from David Friedmann. Evan Rankin (8th) extended the lead to two goals once again at 6:03 of the second when he snuck in a shot on a feed from Tylor Spink. Just one minute later, Jenks was credited with his second goal of the game, this time on a power play. Fort Wayne got one back at 12:43 of the period, via a power play netter from Friedmann, his second of the game. The Komets would not quit, netting their third goal of the game on a breakaway right at the end of the second period.

The Komets tied it up at the 7 minute mark of the third period. Headed into overtime, with the game tied at 4, Tyson Spink (8th) took a feed from his brother Tylor, and put it in the back of the net.

Jake Paterson (8-3-0-0) got the nod for the Toledo Walleye against Fort Wayne netminder Eric Hartzell. Paterson stopped 28 of the 32 shots he faced. Garrett Bartus of Fort Wayne took over in net for the Komets in the second period.

Notes: Berschbach is now two assists away from tying Kyle Rogers’ all-time record of 108 helpers. Evan is now two points away from tying Rogers’ all-time record of 177 points.
