Walleye clamp down on Beast

TOLEDO, OH – Austin Wuthrich scored on a penalty shot late in the second period to lead the Toledo Walleye to a 4-1 win over Brampton Friday night at the Huntington Center. Toledo is unbeaten in six straight games (4-0-2) and has an overall record of 8-5-0-3 while 2-1-0-1 at home.

Toledo Walleye logoThe Beast collected the game’s first goal when Chris Auger beat Jeff Lerg with a quick wrist shot at 7:01 of the second period. Toledo tied the game when Marek Tvrdon (7th) slammed in a rebound at 14:17 of the period. At 18:33, Austin Wuthrich was hooked on a breakaway and the forward was awarded a penalty shot. Wuthrich went between the pads of goaltender Sean Bonar on the penalty shot to give the Walleye a 2-1 lead after two periods.

Just 2:07 into the third period, Tyler Sikura (4th) fired a wrist shot that squeaked through Bonar to put Toledo in front 3-1. Brampton pressured late but defensemen Beau Schmitz scored his first goal of the year on the empty net at 19:28.

Walleye Notes: Goaltender Jeff Lerg stopped 24 of 25 shots and has a record of 5-2-2… Toledo finished without taking a penalty, a feat reached three times last year with the last time being March 21, 2015 vs. Kalamazoo.
