Victoria wins game 1 over Bakersfield

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Victoria Salmon Kings took game one of the National Conference Quarter Final Series at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, defeating the Bakersfield Condors 6-3, before 3,191 fans.
 
The Salmon Kings opened the scoring with a goal by Chad Painchaud only 49 seconds into the match, attempting to set the pace of the game. Bakersfield countered with solid net minding by Jean-Philippe Levasseur throughout the period. At the 17:05 Wes Goldie was denied a goal on a penalty shot.   The Condors’ Stephane Goulet evened the score with a goal with less than two minutes remaining in the first to send the players to the locker rooms tied at 1-1.
 
The second period saw the Kings take the lead again, on a goal by Dirk Southern at 2:09 into the period. Then, Goldie opened the scoring to 3-1, with a goal about two minutes later.    At the 8:15 mark, Goulet found the net for his second of the night, with a breakaway shot that went past Matt Keetley.   A few seconds later, Condors’ Scott Marchesi evened the score with a one-timer to the back of the net.   Just before the end of the period, Goldie sunk the puck, with less than a minute remaining, to give the Kings the edge at the end of the second, 4-3.
 
The third period action was dominated by the Salmon Kings, with a goal at 12:05 by Oliver Filion to put them up 5-3.   The final dager, an empty net goal that was Painchauds second on the night at 18:09 would seal the deal.   Victoria takes game one, 6-3.
 
Victoria lead in shots on goal 29-26 and was one for four on the power play, while Bakersfield was zero for two. Game two will be Thursday at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Center.
