In Las Vegas, the Golden Knights were the beneficiaries of a visit form the hapless New Jersey Devils on Sunday afternoon.
A full house paid to watch the Golden Knights hang a 3-1 loss on New Jersey.
New Jersey did a collective ole when Jack Eichel skated the puck from his own blueline into the slot to wrist home a goal at 11:06 of the third period.
That goal gave the Knights a 2-1 lead at the time.
“We’re at our best, obviously, playing four lines. I thought everyone chipped in today,” Eichel said. “That’s what you need. That’s when we’re at our best, and you got that full-team effort today. We found a way to win a game, and hopefully we can use this as momentum here, as we have a few games at home this week to try and win some more points.”
Logan Thompson made 20 saves in the win.
Vegas moved to 36-24-7 off their third win in four games.
After a scoreless first 40 minutes, Nico Hischier scored for New Jersey with 38 seconds gone in the third period and a 1-0 lead.
Vegas tied it, 1-1, when William Carrier deflected a shot by Alex Pietrangelo, scoring at 2:57.
“Good for Will, that’s his game,” Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. “He’s missed some time here. Any time you get on the scoresheet, whether you shoot the puck in the net or it goes off you, that’s good for a guy’s confidence. Happy for him. … When you need a goal from somewhere else, and that fourth line you can consider somewhere else, that gives you some juice.”
New Jersey dropped to 32-32-4 off their fourth loss in five games.
“I liked [the] first 50 minutes of the game,” New Jersey coach Travis Green said. “They physically took over the last 10 minutes of the game. Whether we were weathered, whether they just raised their game, I thought they had some momentum at different parts. I thought we carried the momentum throughout the game as well. It was back and forth. I thought it was a step in the right direction from last night’s (4-1 loss to the Arizona Coyotes).”
The Knights iced the win when William Karlsson hit an empty net with 19 seconds left on the game clock for the 3-1 final count on the scoreboard.
Jake Allen made 34 saves in the loss.
“We’re right there to the end,” Allen said. “It was a great hockey game. It was a great game, entertaining, we played hard. They’re a good hockey team. A good team at home, especially in this barn. They have a really good record over the years and it was a hard-fought battle. We were right there at the end. Maybe one bounce goes our way, it is a totally different game.”
