Vegas stuns Blues in OT with 4-3 win

In Las Vegas Friday night, Jonathan Marchessault struck for his second goal of the game in overtime to send the Golden Knights to a 4-3 win over the St Louis Blues.

The loss pushed the Blues back to the second wild card spot in the Western Conference with the Anaheim Ducks beating the Los Angeles Kings Friday, 2-1, in overtime.

The win pushed the Knights seven points clear of the San Jose Sharks for the top spot in the Pacific Division.

“Someone told me we’re one point away from clinching the division,” Golden Knights head coach Gerard Gallant said. “That’s what the goal is. Let’s keep battling hard, playing hard.”

William Karlsson and James Neal also scored in regulation for the Knights.

Malcolm Subban made 21 saves in picking up the win.

“Every time you get in there, you get nervous trying to live up to [Fleury’s] standards,” Subban said. “The boys played well in front of me tonight and made it easy on me.”

Patrik Berglund and Brayden Schenn scored for the Blues and Chris Thorburn forced the extra session with a third period goal to tie it.

“We fought hard,” Blues head coach Mike Yeo said. “This is a really good hockey team, and it was going to be a close game. So not surprised to see it go to overtime, and obviously you get into 3-on-3 hockey and anything can happen out there.”

Jake Allen made 22 saves in taking the loss.

The Blues now travel to Glendale to face the Arizona Coyotes.

“It’s going to be a tough back-to-back now. We’re going to have to really respond to this challenge, you know, being short on D, having to use guys a little extra tonight. Whoever we throw in there tomorrow, we’ll have to make sure they’re ready to go, and as a group we’ll have to be, like I said, ready to respond,” Yeo said of the back to back games down a defenseman.
