In Vancouver, Thursday night, the Vegas Golden Knights continued their reinvigorated play with a 4-3 win over the fading Canucks.
Max Pacioretty was part of the effort to shake off some more rust as he struck twice for the Knights.
It didn’t come easily as the Knights blew a 3-1 lead in the third period and needed a goal from William Karlsson to get the win.
“It’s good to win when you are not playing at your best,” Karlsson said. “One hundred percent [Smith’s] goal. I just had my stick there and hit the puck pretty much. It’s good for me and Reilly to finally score one shorthanded. We’ve had a lot of chances in the past but it feels like every game we are dangerous shorthanded.”
The Knights improved to 14-12-1.
It was the fifth straight win for Vegas who are finally showing some strength in the west.
“Great streak for the team,” Pacioretty said. “To give up two and then go down and get a shorty, that’s how you build chemistry and build momentum. That never-quit attitude has been there for our team during this streak and we’ve seen how well we can play when we play the right way. It’s been a lot of fun but we have to keep going.”
William Carrier also scored for Vegas.
Marc-Andre Fleury made 33 saves to get the win.
Brock Boeser struck twice and Alexander Edler added a single marker in the loss.
“If we play like that we’re going to be all right,” Canucks coach Travis Green said.
The Canucks are 1-8-2 in their last 11 games.

Jacob Markstrom made 27 saves in the loss.
“It stings a little bit more knowing that we played a good game and at the end of the night we didn’t get the two points. There’s going to be times where you don’t play the best and you still get two points, and tonight was one of the nights where we played, I thought, pretty well for 60 minutes and we didn’t get the two points,” the Canucks’ Ben Huttonsaid after another loss.
