Vegas double-up Kings, 6-3

In Los Angeles, Jonathan Marchessault hit for a pair of goals and added an assist for the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday in a 6-3 win over the Kings.

Vegas struck for three goals in the first period for a 3-1 lead after the first 20 minutes of play.

Laurent Brossoit made 24 saves in the Vegas win.

“They get the job done,” Vegas’ Chandler Stephenson (goal and assist) said. “Everybody that is in the lineup is experienced and knows how to just kind of have a greasy, hard-working road game, so I think that was a little emphasis tonight.”

All four first period goals came within a span of 76 seconds.

“Yeah, that was pretty crazy,” the Knights’ Ben Hutton. “I mean, not every time you’re watching or playing a game there’s that many goals that quick. So that was good to see a couple of the boys bury a couple goals. That was fun.”

Reilly Smith (power play) and Keegan Kolesar opened the outburst to give Vegas a 2-0 lead.

The Kings’ Adrian Kempe put up a marker for a 2-1 score, and Marchessault scored for a 3-1 advantage.

“I think we gave up too many odd-man rushes, in the first period especially, and that’s on everybody, forwards and ‘D.’ We’ve got to be more responsible,” Kempe said. “Last time we played Vegas at home, we did all those details really good and we were on point for 60 minutes. Tonight, we weren’t really there in the beginning and it cost us a couple goals.”

Vegas scored twice in the middle frame for a 5-1 lead off goals from Stephenson, on the power play, and after Mattias Janmark .

“We played our way in,” Los Angeles coach Todd McLellan said. “Embarrassment sometimes does that to you as well, so we do have a lot of pride in there. There’s a lot of strong-willed guys, and they got it back. … But you’re not scoring six goals … seven goals I guess we would have needed tonight against that team, so the rest of the night was just about trying to get back into playing the way we need to play.”

Trevor Moore struck for a  shorthanded goal for LA and Alex Iafallo scored in the third period for the Kings.

Marchessault added his second strike in the third period.

“I think he’s just always around the puck, always working hard,” Stephenson said.

Jonathan Quick got the start for the Kings, but was given the hook in the middle frame after surrendering the 5-1 lead. Quick had 10 saves on the night.

Garret Sparks  relieved Quick and made 11 saves.

“Like everybody else’s, he was trying to find his way, and wasn’t gonna leave him in for six, seven and eight,” McLellan said. “‘Sparksy’ went in and did a good job.”
